The network of walking trails “Na Senda de Miguel Torga” aims, on the one hand, to pay tribute to one of the greatest figures of Portuguese literature, who for more than forty years roamed these landscapes and wrote here some of his finest poems and, on the other hand, to serve as a means for nature lovers to fully enjoy the natural and cultural heritage of Terras de Bouro.

The viewpoints are open windows from which to admire the vast scenery of this natural heritage. To discover the Peneda-Gerês National Park is to visit the various viewpoints located across the municipality.

The Pedra Bela viewpoint is one of the most famous spots in Gerês, where you can see the Caniçada reservoir, the Gerês and Cávado rivers winding through the mountains, and the fauna and flora characteristic of this rare and striking scenic beauty.

The abundance of waterfalls, lakes and watercourses lends incomparable beauty to the mountain landscape. The Cascata do Arado is fed by mountain watercourses, originating from the Camalhão and Teixeira rivers, which flow into the Arado river.

The Rio Caldo Marina is a highly sought-after tourist facility, both for its scenic beauty and for the excellent conditions it offers for water sports.

The Alqueirão River Beach, awarded Gold quality by QUERCUS, is located on the shore of the Caniçada reservoir, just after the bridge connecting Rio Caldo to Vila do Gerês. This bathing area is the ideal place to enjoy relaxing moments by the water while contemplating the surrounding mountains and valleys, as well as the Rio Caldo Marina and the Sanctuary of S. Bento da Porta Aberta on the opposite shore.

The Geira – Roman Road, also known as Via Nova or Via XVIII (classified as National Heritage) of the Antonine Itinerary, which connected Bracara Augusta (Braga) to Asturica Augusta (Astorga), is an extraordinary Roman archaeological complex that preserves, virtually intact, along the 30 km within the municipality, bridges, walls and roadways. It is notable for having the greatest concentration of inscribed milestones in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, many bearing inscriptions datable between the late 1st and the 4th century AD.

The Village of Vilarinho da Furna was a communal village whose origins are lost in the mists of memory. Since 1971, this village has been submerged beneath the reservoir of the Vilarinho da Furna dam and, with it, a great ethnographic wealth. However, when the dam is emptied for cleaning or when the water level drops during periods of drought, the houses, paths and walls of the old village can still be seen.

São Bento da Porta Aberta, nestled among the lace-like fringes of Gerês (home to the most prosperous and lavish fauna and flora in Portugal) and bathed by the abundant waters of Caniçada, stands as one of Portugal’s greatest religious symbols. The Basilica of S. Bento da Porta Aberta is the second largest sanctuary in Portugal and attracts, every year, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims on its feast days: 21 March, 11 July and, above all, 12 and 13 August.
